What Does the Angi Super Service Award Mean? A Knoxville Homeowner’s Guide

Key Points

    • The Angi Super Service Award goes to companies in good standing with a 4.5-star average rating and at least three new service-performed reviews in the review period.
    • It is a signal of customer satisfaction, not a license check, an insurance check, or a price guarantee.
    • Check any award claim yourself: the award years, the company’s rating and recent reviews, and its Tennessee license.
    • No single badge settles it. Compare awards, reviews, accreditation, and written estimates.

Introduction

The Angi Super Service Award recognizes home service companies that keep a 4.5-star average rating, stay in good standing, and earn new customer reviews each year. It tells you customers have rated a company well. It doesn’t tell you everything.

Contractors everywhere display awards, badges, and star ratings. Chaffee’s own site lists the award, “11 years running.”  A badge is only as useful as your understanding of what’s behind it.

This guide covers how the award is earned, what it does and doesn’t show, how to check any award claim, and how to read HVAC company reviews. You may know it by its old name, the Angie’s List Super Service Award. Angie’s List is now Angi.

What Is the Angi Super Service Award, and How Is It Earned?

The Angi Super Service Award goes to home pros who are in good standing, keep an average rating of 4.5 stars or higher, and earn at least three new service-related reviews in the review period. Angi awards it automatically in early February.

Angi’s criteria page lists these requirements:

    • Good standing with Angi
    • A 4.5+ star average rating, and a trade report on a 2024 winner says current and lifetime ratings of at least 4.5 stars
    • At least three new service-performed reviews in the review period, which runs November 1 to October 31
    • No application, because the page describes the award as automatic

Angi says the award was first released in 1999. Its criteria page still shows an older review period, so check Angi for the current year’s rules.

What Does an Award Like This Tell You About an HVAC Company?

It tells you some things and leaves others out.

What It Does Show

Customers rated the company well, over the review period. The company is active on the platform and in good standing. The reviews come from people who had service performed.

What It Does Not Show

Angi’s published criteria don’t list a contractor license, insurance, pricing, or technician training. Ask Angi what “good standing” includes before assuming more. Three reviews in a period is also a low bar for a busy company, so look at total volume too.

The Federal Trade Commission says to consider only contractors who are licensed and insured and to confirm the license with your state.

Why “Years Running” Matters

One year can be luck. Several years in a row suggest steady ratings. But “years running” is a claim you can check, so ask for the specific years and look for them on the company’s profile.

How Can You Check an Award Claim Yourself? What to Do, Step by Step

    1. Ask for the award years, not just the badge.
    2. Find the company’s profile and check its rating and recent reviews.
    3. Cross-check other sources, such as Google reviews and the BBB. The BBB profile lists the company as accredited since 10/30/2014 with an A+ rating. The BBB notes it doesn’t verify third-party information.
    4. Verify the Tennessee license with the state’s contractor lookup, and ask for proof of insurance.
    5. Get written estimates from more than one company. The FTC says a written estimate should include the work, materials, completion date, and price, and not to automatically pick the lowest bid.
    6. Don’t pay the full amount up front, and don’t make the final payment until the work is done and you’re satisfied.

How to Read HVAC Company Reviews Critically

Stars alone don’t tell the story. Use this checklist:

    • Look at recent reviews, not just the average.
    • Prefer specific stories over general praise, such as what was fixed and who showed up.
    • Read the three-star and lower reviews, and see how the company responded.
    • Compare more than one platform.
    • Be wary of a wall of reviews with no detail.

For context, the FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule took effect October 21, 2024. It covers fake reviews and paying for favorable ones.

Which Trust Signals Can You Check for Chaffee?

Each of these is something you can verify:

    • Award: Angi Super Service Award winner.
    • BBB: A+ rating, accredited since 10/30/2014.
    • Google reviews:
    • Local roots: Locally owned in Knoxville.
    • Guarantee: 100% satisfaction guarantee.
    • Partner status: TVA EnergyRight member and Mitsubishi Elite Diamond Contractor.

Technician certifications are a separate topic. We cover them in the October NATE-certified vs. uncertified technicians article.

Awards, Reviews, Accreditation, and Licenses: What Each One Tells You

Signal What it tells you What it doesn’t tell you How to check
Angi Super Service Award Strong customer ratings on that platform License, insurance, price Check the profile and award years
Online reviews Recent customer experiences Skill level or code compliance Read recent and low-star reviews
BBB accreditation and rating BBB standards and complaint history Quality of work on your job BBB profile
State contractor license The company is licensed in Tennessee Customer service quality State license lookup

Use several signals together.

When Is an Award Enough, and When Should You Dig Deeper?

An award is a fine way to build a shortlist for repairs and maintenance.

For a big job, such as a system replacement or a panel upgrade, verify the license and insurance and compare written estimates no matter how many awards a company shows. A company without an award can still be a good choice. A newer company, or one that doesn’t use the platform, may have none.

If a quote feels off, get a second opinion.

Expert Tips for the Angi Super Service Award

    • Ask which years the company won, and check them.
    • Verify the Tennessee license separately. No badge replaces it.
    • Read the three-star reviews and the company’s responses.
    • Get a written estimate that lists the work, materials, completion date, and price.

Conclusion: Angi Super Service Award

The Angi Super Service Award is a good sign of customer satisfaction. It isn’t a substitute for checking the license, the reviews, and the estimates.

They need good standing, a 4.5+ average rating, and at least three new service-performed reviews between November 1 and October 31. Angi awards it automatically in early February.

Is the Angie's List Super Service Award still given?

Angie’s List is now Angi, and the award is called the Angi Super Service Award. Check Angi for the current year’s winners.

At least three new service-performed reviews in the review period, plus the rating and good-standing requirements. A company doesn’t have to be large to qualify.
